Man's best friend

These are bonds that are not easily broken. The relationship between man and his best friend is a simple one, but a strong and defining one. Words are not necessary...one look and there is an understanding.

These are what great moments are made of.

Le Famille: Jeff, Bri, & Rubino

This little, adorably cute, gorgeous, fun-loving, witty family has such a very special place in my heart. Yeah, I know I say that a lot, but it's true! I feel so lucky and humbled by all the wonderful people that have come into my life at one point or another. I really do.

Our little story begins about 20 years ago. Wait, that can't be right, can it? I cannot possibly have even been alive 20 years ago let alone have a story to tell about it... There's no way I'm that old. Hold please while I count.... .... .... .... Is it too early for a drink? Apparently I'm old enough to have a story from 20 years ago. Crap.

As I was saying, 20 or so odd years ago the stars aligned in just the right way with the planets and brought Bri into my life. We were childhood best friends and were pretty much inseparable for a few years. We did everything together as little girl best friends do. There might even be video proof of this locked away somewhere in a vault guarded by three fierce, burly bodyguards. Yep. I'm pretty sure that's where it is.

As life often does, it goes on. Life took Bri and me in different directions. I missed her. I thought about her often as life progressed. Then, about two years ago the stars re-aligned and we reconnected! Sparks flew. Yes they did. It's totally possible.

There is just something about childhood besties I tell you. There is a lifelong connection there. No matter how much time passes, no matter how different you are, no matter where life has taken you, childhood friends knew you way back when... and that means something. It's a connection to a previous you; an innocent, young you.

When Bri asked me to photograph her family this holiday season I think I jumped out of my chair with excitement. I knew this would be a really fun shoot and they would be up for anything...and yes they were! Driving over two hours just so I could rudely shove my camera in their faces and then waking up at the butt crack of dawn to prance around in the very crisp morning air proved it.

They.Worked.It.Out.

I'm not sure what they were giggling at, but their connection in this one melts me to my core.

Um, yes please!

I had to sneak this one in. Look at her! Wow.

Thank you so much for letting me capture your beautiful family and for continuing to let me be a part of your lives. Happy holidays Bri, Jeff, and Rubino. I hope Santa brings you everything you hope and wish for this season and in the new year!

Sneak Peek

"If you come to me sickly you know I'm gonna make you well
If you come to me all hexed up you know I'm gonna break the spell
If you come to me hungry you know I'm gonna fill you full of grits
If it's lovin you're likin, I'll kiss you and give you the shiverin' fits'
Cause I'm a woman! W-O-M-A-N, I'll say it again"
- Peggy Lee

Oh yeah, we're going there. Can you feel it? Can.You.Feel.It???

It's getting way too hot over here...

Le Chiot: Rubino Valentino

"Dear Dogs and Cats:

The dishes with the paw prints are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Racing me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn’t help because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort, however.. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other, stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out on the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is no secret exit from the bathroom! If, by some miracle, I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge in an attempt to open the door. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years – canine/feline attendance is not required.

The proper order for kissing is: Kiss me first, then go smell the other dog or cat’s butt. I cannot stress this enough.

Finally, in fairness, dear pets, I have posted the following message on the front door:

TO ALL NON-PET OWNERS WHO VISIT AND LIKE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT OUR PETS:
(1) They live here. You don’t.

(2) If you don’t want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. That’s why they call it ‘fur’-niture.
(3) I like my pets a lot better than I like most people."

Rubino, Bino Tino, Bean, Fatty, etc.... is about to turn one year old (Congrats!) and he decided for his birthday he would like to bring sexy back. Enjoy.

I'm pretty sure this is the face that gets him out of trouble....ugh swoon.

"Help me please. Do you see this? She's actually tying antlers to my head. FML."

"This one's not so bad. In fact, I feel quite dapper and manly..."

Mr. Rubino Valentino, you stole my heart. I simply cannot function another day without you and your amazing snausage face. Come back and let's snuggle...puh-lease!!!

Autumn

Do people still say Autumn in reference to the Fall season? I think it should be used more. It's such a pretty word, no? Autumn. Autumn. Autumn. Autumn. Autumn...and the word's lost all meaning. I'm good at that. Now you try....................... Told ya! Why am I so ADD?

I'm lucky enough to live in a state that has almost perfect weather 365 days a year. Yeah, I'm talking California baby. Good old Cali. My home state. I can't complain. I won't complain. Ever. I'm a first generation Californian (thank you parents!!) and I don't plan on leaving ever ever ever! It's true. I see no need to subject myself to tornadoes or hurricanes or severe snow storms and the like. I'm perfectly happy with my 70 degree weather year round (read: I'm a total baby in cold weather and you really don't want to hear me whine about being cold. People have likened it to a cat being tortured. I'm just saying).

That being said, California seems to lack seasons. I'm talking real seasons...the kind you see in December in Colorado or New York. We are literally a season-less state. That's kind of sad. No really, it is. In other parts of our glorious country the leaves have changed colors and fallen from the trees. Oranges, reds and browns litter the city and countryscapes. I imagine it's quite beautiful. I say "imagine" because I've never actually experienced Autumn outside of California.

But hold on there... Hold the press... This just in... Walking around northern California the last couple of weeks it seems Autumn has finally arrived (it's November, but better late than never, right?)! The trees are shedding the most beautiful colored leaves, the wind is picking up and the air is definitely crispy. I feel like I'm in a Norman Rockwell Autumn painting!! Ok, maybe not, but it's Autumn nonetheless and it's purrrrrrty!

And is it just me or do those pictures make you want to grab some pumpkin cookies, gingerbread and hot chocolate stat?! Calorie free of course. Grab your coat folks, it's Autumn outside!

About Me

Do you ever have one of those itches deep down inside? Or maybe it's a voice gently whispering in the back of your head... or in my case rudely yelling profanities at you to wake up and get your act together? Well, it has been getting awfully loud in my head the last couple of years and oddly enough I've been trying to ignore all that ruckus. Why? I'm not entirely sure. I just know that I've always been a nerdy science girl with a passion for the performing and visual arts. Weird combo, right? I blame my engineer father and my theatre mother. Their fault entirely. They say opposites attract, no? Needless to say I've been quite conflicted from an early age dabbling in photography, videography, theatre and dance along with science fairs, space camp, and one too many biology classes. I love it all...can't choose...don't even try and make me! Nope, won't do it. Well the last 4 years of my life were spent catering to my left brain studying neuroscience and autism and I've had a blast! Oh my nerdy self loved every last second of it. If only that obnoxious voice would leave me alone. Quiet in there! I guess my right brain needs a little attention too. So, here I am. I'm finally doing it. I was a lot of talk at first. Wasn't sure I would/could actually do it, but with A LOT of support from family and friends, I made good on those words....Emmy Cube Photography has arrived!

Welcome to my blog! I am very excited to finally be here. :) I hope you will come along with me on my photographic journey while I learn, grow --and yeah, have a little fun. School has been in session for a while and I've been known to document some of my assignments from time to time but my real love has been getting the opportunity to capture important events in people's lives. I am so grateful and humbled that I've been able to make this dream a reality and YOU have let me be a part of your special day, event or even moment. Thank you. And oh yeah, I'm lucky enough to have some great friends who let me point my camera at them and shoot away too. Thank you guys for being so brave and helping me to quiet the monster in my head...in fact it's already a lot calmer in there...hmmm she might be sleeping...ahhhhhhhh peace.....finally.
